Some general Information on the waste industry
The National Environmental Management Waste Act (NEMWA) ammendments that have recently come into force include requirements to classify wastes and to ensure that all waste that is transported has an accompanying Safety Data Sheet.
NEMWA will also restrict or ban certain wastes from being placed on landfill, in 2019 no liquids will be permitted to be landfilled.
SAWIC (South African Waste Information System) requires that all generators that have the capacity to generate in excess of 20 kg of hazardous waste per day register with them, this is done on their website and is a quick and painless process. Without such registration a waste transporter is not permitted to collect the generators waste.
All treatment / disposal sites are required to report the waste that they have collected to SAWIC, they are required to use the generators SAWIC number as a reference to trace the waste on the SAWIC system
Local By-Laws are being updated to accomodate the better handling and management of wastes, the focus is on reduction and reuse. Generators are required to have Integrated waste management plans. All transporters are required to be permitted by the local authority and generators will be required to produce proof to the authorities of contracts between them and authorised waste transporters to the loacl authorities.
